Select by Calphalon Knives

Calphalon Select reviews

Select by Calphalon is a semi-professional grade knife. It is made from no-stain steel. No-stain steel won’t lose its luster because of the added chromium in it. This is an intermediate between stainless and high carbon steels and is an excellent choice for serious minded home chefs. So Calphalon Select knives holds a better edge than stainless steel Calphalon knives. They are more rust resistant than a carbon steel knife but less resistant than stainless. Each Select by Calphalon knife set comes with a full 10 year warranty

Choosing a Calphalon Knife Set

For home chefs the main things to consider are the metal, the variety of knife designs and uses and the shape and construction. Unless you are buying a knife for a very specific purpose (e.g. a sushi chef) then we will focus on the Calphalon knife set that match your day to day needs.

The metal in your knife should reflect the priorities of your cooking. People often think they want a carbon steel blade because of its hardness it will hold a sharper blade longer. However, carbon steel will rust and requires additional care. Over time, even with care they will get a dull “patina” that won’t hurt how they function, just their appearance. Ceramic blades are popular as well but also require special care.

For most homes, a high-carbon stainless steel makes sense. High-carbon stainless steel retains its sharpness very well and it is tough and easy to maintain. They should never rust and are less brittle against hard materials.

Calphalon Knife Set Blocks

One big question is should you buy a Calphalon Knife Block Set or just buy individual knives. Calphalon Knife Blocks are an attractive, convenient way to store your knives. Also, a block set essentially curates a collection of Calphalon knives for you, so you are buying a good mix of types.

However, once you buy a block set you can’t expand it. Also, if you buy an unusual or new style there is no guarantee you will be able to buy additional knives of that exact style and finish indefinitely.

So our general suggestion to young people is to buy a solid, medium sized but inexpensive Calphalon knife set, like a Calphalon Classic 6 piece set, to start. This will cover the basics while you learn about cooking and earn more money. Then, depending upon the types and amount of cooking you do, replace it with a nicer set of Calphalon knives. Preferable a large, Precision or Katana knife set that covers all the bases. These are quality tools that should last a lifetime.

Calphalon Knives Design: Bolster and Tang

One thing we do like is a full tang blade in our Calphalon knives. This is when the metal extends all the way through the handle, which is usually sandwiched between wood, plastic or another material to make the handle. Half tang knives extend halfway into the handle. A full tang allows for increased force and leverage and is less likely to flex, bend or break.

When a Calphalon knives blade has ‘bolster,’ this refers to the knife blade with a very thick section at the base. This thick area provides some added weight and, especially strength to the blade. For a good, lifetime purchase, we recommend always buying Calphalon knives with bolster blades.
