KRUPS Burr Grinder Review
Great coffee starts with a great grinder and that is the promise of the KRUPS GX5000. The GX 5000 is probably the most popular KRUPS burr grinder model and it is easy to see why. But, our KRUPS GX5000 review will ask how KRUPS grinders stand up to the competition and that’s where things get tricky.
The KRUPS GX5000 professional electric coffee burr grinder uses nice, flat burrs. We wrote in our burr vs blade grinders article why burr grinders like the GX5000 are strongly preferred over blade grinders. Just do not buy a blade grinder. In general, we recommend a conical burr grinder over a flat burr grinder like the KRUPS GX5000.
KRUPS GX 5000 Grind Quality and Consistency
Just because it isn’t conical isn’t to say the KRUPS GX5000 isn’t a good grinder, it is excellent. It offers a lot at a low price point and it works well. But we do think the small price increase to upgrade to a conical grinder like the Cuisinart CBM-18N is worth the extra cost.
KRUPS GX5000 has an easy adjustment knob with 9 different coffee ground coarseness levels and has some minor adjustments you can make between them. This is important because espresso grounds needs to be very fine, dip coffee grounds are coarse and pour over and French press coffee makers require very coarse grounds. You won’t be able to grind fine enough for Turkish coffee with the GX5000 KRUPS Burr Grinder, but most people buy a specialized grinder for that any way.
For its price, the KRUPS GX5000 is a very consistent grinder. An important issue for a coffee grinder is the consistency of the size and shape of the grounds. Try to think of coffee in terms of each ground being exposed to water (or steam). The size and amount of surface area is one of the things that affects how it brews and how it tastes. So, in addition to having the right coarseness you need consistent grounds. Inconsistent grounds leads to inconsistent flavor.
Our Cuisinart coffee grinder reviews offer some good alternatives to the KRUPS GX5000. A good comparable home grinder to the KRUPS GX5000 is the Cuisinart DBM-8. The KRUPS burr grinder is a few dollars cheaper than the GX5000 and is also a flat burr grinder. The DMB-8 is a very popular grinder and a lot of people have had great experiences.
These are comparable. For perhaps $20 more, you can buy a conical burr Cuisinart CBM-18N. This is a much better grinder that will retain (lose) fewer grinds and grind more consistently leaving a better tasting coffee or espresso.
Cleaning and Maintaining the KRUPS GX5000
This KRUPS is moderately easy to clean, it isn’t especially noise for a coffee grinder and has an 8 oz bean container. All of this is solid and competitive with other models.

Not a Professional Grinder
A coffee grinder is a tool. Buying a cheap tool or the wrong tool for the job rarely works out. The GX 5000 is an inexpensive home model. So, if you are not a connoisseur, you are not using a world class espresso machine and not grinding large volumes multiple times every day then it is probably fine.
If you have an outstanding espresso maker, or unusual demands then don’t buy it. In this category, then don’t buy it. You get good quality, consistency, noise levels, machine and burr durability and output. The KRUPS GX5000 comes with some basic dosing with an auto stop feature. This allows you to set the quantity from 2 to 12 cups worth of coffee grounds. This is very basic dosing and nowhere as good as a high-end coffee grinder like the Rancilio Rocky SD, for example. A Rancilio or other higher priced coffee grinder with be better across the board so don’t try to buy something that won’t do the job.
KRUPS GX5000 Review and Recommendation
In general, we rate the KRUPS GX5000 burr grinder a “Buy.” For normal use in home, daily coffee drinker conditions this is a very good choice and it will last for years. This KRUPS Burr Grinder is a bit of a Goldilocks coffee grinder. Not too expensive, not too noisy not too inconsistent, not too hard to clean. It is solid across the board. Again, this KRUPS Burr Grinder is worth looking at our Cuisinart coffee grinder reviews for alternatives. We also have other coffee grinder reviews if you want more ideas.
